A Woman in Time's Layers

A Woman in Time’s Layers—Ohjo Building, Kabukicho. A photographic collaboration by Aoi Yamada & Mumuko. One female body placed inside an architecture of time. Built in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, the Ohjo Building began as a place for music and words, later shifting with the city’s desires into cabaret, karaoke and izakaya. For over half a century, it accumulated layers of pleasure and time. Inside this structure, a woman appears. She does not speak. She exists. Leaning, hanging, dissolving, she shifts the weight of time, if only slightly. A brief breath within time.

Martina Matencio

Martina Matencio’s photographs coexist in a universe of contained nostalgia and melancholy, where light and emotions are perpetual. Subtle, sad or melancholic emotions, but cheerful at the same time. Since the age of 16 she experimented with photography and at 20 it was her way of life. Her relationship with photography began when she had to take care of a child with a mental illness. By taking photos of him, she discovered it was the best way to contribute to the world.
